چکیده

Rhizobial-induced chlorosis in soybeans (Glcine uinax.) is caused by a phytotoxin produced in the nodules of the affected plants (1, 4). The phytotoxin has been isolated from nodules and partially characterized as a low molecular-weight amino compound (3). In the previous paper we reported finding an unidentified amino acid (unknown Y) in soybean nodules, the metabolism of which appeared to be somewhat related to that of the toxin. Although production of the 2 compounds in the nodule was associated with certain strains of Rhi4obimni japonicumin, it was not established whether the rhizobia or the host was actually synthesizing either or both of the compounds. In this paper we report that both the phytotoxin and unknown Y can be synthesized by Rhi-obium in pure culture, and we describe methods for relatively large-scale production and isolation of both compoullds.

Inhibition of Soybean Cell Growth by the Adsorption of Rhizobium japonicum.

Soybean cells in suspension culture were inhibited in their growth by mixed culture with Rhizobium japonicum 5033. Rhizobium cells had the ability to adsorb on the surface of soybean cells. Cell envelope prepared from Rhizobium by sonic oscillation inhibited the growth of soybean cells. The growth-inhibiting activity of the cell envelope was depressed by beta-glucosidase, KIO(4), urea, sodium c...

Role of Lectins in Plant-Microorganism Interactions: III. Influence of Rhizosphere/Rhizoplane Culture Conditions on the Soybean Lectin-binding Properties of Rhizobia.

The influence of rhizosphere/rhizoplane culture conditions on the ability of various rhizobia to bind soybean seed lectin (SBL) was examined. Eleven strains of the soybean symbiont, Rhizobium japonicum, and six strains of various heterologous Rhizobium species were cultured in root exudate of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and in association with roots of soybean seedlings which were growing ...

Evaluation of the Effect of Intercropping Sugarcane - Legume on the Quantitative, Qualitative and Physiological Characteristics of Sugarcane

In order to investigate the effect of different treatments of  intercropping sugarcane with two types of legumes on some quantitative and qualitative propertys of sugarcane, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 14 treatments and four replications in two locations in Ahvaz, Iran in 2016-2017. The treatments included: Pure Sugarcane, Pure Soybean, Pure Cowpea, Pu...

Role of lectins in plant-microorganism interactions: I. Binding of soybean lectin to rhizobia.

Highly purified soybean lectin (SBL) was labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC-SBL) or tritium ((3)H-SBL) and repurified by affinity chromatography. FITC-SBL was found to bind to living cells of 15 of the 22 Rhizobium japonicum strains tested. The lectin did not bind to cells of the other seven R. japonicum strains, or to cells of any of the nine Rhizobium strains tested which do not no...

Modified Fluorescent Technique, Using Rhodamine, for Studies of Rhizobium japonicum-Soybean Symbiosis.

Rhodamine-conjugated capsular polysaccharides isolated from Rhizobium japonicum 61A76NS were used to examine binding between the labeled polysaccharides and soybean roots. Fluorescein-labeled polysaccharides were not satisfactory because soybean root hairs autofluoresce in the fluorescein region.
